Desire-realm consciousness (Buddhism)

  • Kamadhatu
  • Dod-khams (Tibetan)

Description

States of consciousness exist as are appropriate to the beings in the Desire Realm. There are 6 types: hell-beings, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, demigods and gods. The hell-beings have 8 hot-hells, one on top of the other, and each of the 8, in each of its four corners, has 4 neighbouring hells; altogether 108 neighbouring hells. The hell-beings also have 8 cold hells. In addition to the major 16 hells there are special hells. The next type of conscious beings, the hungry ghosts are subdivided into 3; animals are divided into 2 types, one of which humans ordinarily never see. Humans are divided into 12 different types according to an invisible or archetypal geography of lands centred on Mount Meru. On the Mount's lowest places are 4 classes of demigods. Of gods there are the 4 Great Kings, and the 33 gods above. In the ether over the Mount are 3 classes of gods. All these beings are in the Desire Realm and correspond to states of consciousness.
