Kamaloka consciousness (Buddhism, Pali)

Description

States of consciousness exist as are appropriate to the beings in the sensuous world (kamaloka). There are four sub-human realms of beings: hell, demon world, animal kingdom and ghost world. Then there is the human world; and above it the deva lokas of heavenly beings, of which there are six kinds in the sensuous sphere.

Context

The mystical geography of southern Buddhism for this sphere is similar to that of the northern Buddhism of Tibet. The Pali has six levels; the Tibetan also has six, but the order is different; and the Pali uniquely has an infernal demon world while the Tibetan has a unique, superior demigod world. This means the human world is fifth in Pali but fourth in the Tibetan.
