We really believed that the best thing you could do for the poor and for people in the future was to develop as fast as possible, to make the pie grow. We believed that the next generation would be better off, and so we felt comfortable not asking equity questions. We were confident that resource scarcity and environmental limits would not impede development. But these are the assumptions of westernized people who share certain cultural assumptions such as progress and individualism, they are not part of the logic of economics.
