Lack of meaningful educational context for ethical decisions

Education today is aimed at the acquisition of facts and skills and does not provide the experience of ambiguity necessary in the individual's struggle to develop an ethical posture. Rather, ethics has become so much the province of the individual that each person's posture is developed alone, without reference to the larger society or to the wisdom of the past in any organized form.

Education tends to emphasize theories instead of values, concepts rather than human beings, abstraction rather than consciousness, answers instead of questions, ideology and efficiency rather than conscience. Education is no guarantee of decency, prudence or wisdom. More of the same kind of education will only compound the current problems of society. Education should now be measured against the standards of decency and human survival.
