Lack of symbolism in local relationships

  • Faded community symbols
  • Uninterpreted village symbols

Nature

There is no present-day system of meaningful symbols to remind people of their relationships to the local social framework which is their practical link to global society. In addition, the increasing mobility of the population diminishes people's ability to engage locally. This results in the paradox that as the individual becomes increasingly aware of events in the global arena he experiences decreasing opportunity to deal creatively with this awareness through his local relationships; and his sense of obligation becomes fragmented.
