Increasing lag in education against population growth

Incidence

Despite the vast expansion of education that has reduced world illiteracy to 34%, the growth in population means that in fact the number of illiterate adults has actually increased, and the number of people in the 10 to 24 years age group is expected to double by the year 2000. The majority of the population is in rural areas, and traditional westernized educational approaches are unable to meet the demand of this increasing population.
