Sphere of mercy and greatness (Kabbalah)

  • Chesed sephira

Description

This sphere of awareness is associated with active (as opposed to passive) emotion, with expressive abilities, and thus with the development of the ability to love. It corresponds to the developmental phase of late middle age and the expression of generosity This state is represented as the place of revelations and identified with the four-letter name of God. It is associated with divine mercy and majesty, and with wisdom. Here is the source of all archetypal ideas, so that there can be no images beyond this level although images are used to describe the states beyond, the trinity beyond the abyss. It is symbolized by the positive and negative archetypes of the Great King and the wastrel, and by the planet Jupiter, as well as by Abraham in the Jewish tradition.
