Mutability emblems (Tarot)

  • Fortune-wheel

Description

Among the archetypal emblems projected by the psyche are those that depict change. Change has many aspects. Sometimes it is beneficent, sometimes catastrophic. Sometimes it is represented as irreversible and final. In the Tarot, the emblem of the Wheel of Fortune (number 10) indicates that change may be regulated by periodic laws, as well as being cyclical; so that, for example, the seasons of life and their associated mental states may all come round in the circle of time. This path leads to Chesed, the region of the pure archetypes which reflect the trinity above the abyss, where the alternating polarities are fused as duality is overcome.

Context

In the Kabbalah, the fortune-wheel is placed on path 21 between force or victory (Netzach) and mercy or kindness (Chesed).
