Modes of occurrence of consciousness (Buddhism)

Description

In Hinayana Buddhism, the 89 kinds of consciousness are seen as occurring in 14 different modes: rebirth-linking (reconception); life-continuum; adverting; seeing; hearing; smelling; tasting; touching; receiving; examining or investigating; determining or deciding; impulsion or apperception; registering; death. Once the continuity is interrupted, the process of adverting, etc, up to registration proceeds until life-continuum resumes. The final life-continuum consciousness in the case of one becoming is death or decease, the passing away from that existence. Following death there is rebirth-linking again, and the cycle proceeds through the kinds of becoming or sources of life, destiny, stations of consciousness or conscious durations and abodes of beings. With attainment of arahantship, the cycle ceases at the end of death consciousness.
