Examining (Buddhism)

  • Investigating

Description

When the mind element has arisen and ceased, then the resultant mind-consciousness element arises which examines the objective field which had been received by the mind element. Where the mind-element was with profitable or moral result, then the profitable mind-consciousness element is with joy (desirable object) or indifference or equanimity (neutral object). Where the mind-element was with unprofitable or immoral result, then the mind-consciousness element is unprofitable-resultant. Examining or investigating therefore comprises three kinds of consciousness.

Context

In Hinayana Buddhism, this is the tenth mode of occurrence of consciousness in which the 89 kinds of consciousness proceed.
