Description

Seven groups of mental qualities (37 in all) summarize the Buddhist path. They consist of three groups of four: foundations of mindfulness - [satipatthana]

; correct or perfect efforts (right endeavour) - [samyak prahanani]

; and roads to power - [riddhipada]

. These are followed by the five roots - [indriya]

; and the five controlling or powerful qualities (faith, strength, mindfulness, concentration, wisdom) - [bala]

. The next group lists the seven bodhi (enlightenment, awareness or awakening) factors - [bodhyanga]

; and the final consists of the [eightfold way]

- [aryastangamarga]

. Although the 37 may be considered as occurring in sequence they are also said to be simultaneously present in [lokuttara]

transcendent consciousness. All 37 harmonies are attained when the state of [foe destroyer]

is actualized.
