Description
In Hinayana Buddhism there are four such establishments attained with the lesser path of accumulation through meditations on the impermanence, misery, emptiness and selflessness of: the body; feelings; thoughts; and other internal phenomena, of one's self and other sentient beings. Mahayana Buddhism recognizes the same four but here mindfulness is that of their emptiness – sunyata.
Context
Among the prerequisites for enlightenment – bodhi pakshika dharma – of which there are 37 grouped in seven areas, satipatthana is the first of the seven areas. One of the sections of yogic paths or harmonies with enlightenment defined in Buddhism.
