Practice of presence of mindfulness of body (Buddhism)
- Kayagatasati (Pali)
Description
One of the four foundations of mindfulness, this is body contemplation on the body. Some sources quote this as simply as [dhatuvavatthana]
contemplation of the body in all its components from the sole of the foot to the hair on the head and vice versa. The components listed number 32, including hair of the head, body hair, skin, bones, teeth, urine, etc. Others also include: breathing (inhaling and exhaling) - [anapanasati]
; different postures (whether lying, sitting, standing still or walking); different bodily activities - [dhatu vavatthana]
; and meditation on death (charnel ground contemplation) - [sivathika]
