Mindfulness of bodily components (Buddhism)

  • Dhatuvavatthana (Pali)

Description

Mindfulness is directed towards contemplation of the body in all its components from the sole of the foot to the hair on the head and vice versa. The components listed number 32, including hair of the head, body hair, skin, bones, teeth, urine, etc. These parts may be recognized as comprising only the four elements. Thus mistaken awareness of the body as the self, as a living being, disappears.

Context

An exercise included in and sometimes taken as synonymous with one of the four foundations of mindfulness, body contemplation on the body.
