Cessations (Buddhism)

  • Analytical cessations
  • Non-analytical cessations

Description

Phenomena of the pure class according to Buddhist teaching, these are the true absence of afflictions following their abandonment. Analytical cessation is the state of permanent absence of affliction, nirvana being the ultimate analytical cessation when the last affliction is abandoned. Non-analytical cessation is non-permanent, and occurs when one affliction is abandoned (possibly due to attention to another), and may return under certain conditions.
