In Scotland in 1994 it was estimated that 60 percent of homeless young people are probably homeless because of stressful family relationships. Of those with a step-parent at the age of 16, 44% had left home in the following 3 years, compared with 27% with both parents, and 33% with a single parent. Of the under 18s who left because of domestic tensions, 25% subsequently joined the homeless.
