Maltreatment of pet animals

Other Names:
Maltreatment of companion animals

Time magazine claimed in 1994 that a quarter of all pedigree dogs suffer from a genetic disorder (almost exclusively due to selective breeding). Almost all breeds have their own problems, eg the eye problems such as cataracts or specifically of Dobermanns (inflamammed), chows (turned-in eyelids).

The concept of an animal as being owned as personal property results in much animal suffering. Since such animals are believed to exist primarily for the pleasure of humans, they have become an object of human violence, vanity and neglect.
