Providing increased local employment to reduce poverty

  • Using employment generation programmes to assist the poor

Claim

Employment generation programmes in rural developing areas can only have an effect on food insecurity under certain conditions: some of the poverty must be due to the lack of jobs, there must be no migration outside the region (seasonal migration dilutes any local effects); and, above all, this type of programme should be designed for the long term and should be integrated wth other current development work.
