Victimization emblems (Tarot)

  • Hanged man

Description

Among the images that the psyche may project on itself or in outward representation are those symbolizing personal misfortune of the must grievous, although not necessarily mortal, kind. The emblems of the archetypal victim are one example of this: the scapegoat, the sacrificial lamb or the crucifix; extending to all instruments of public execution: nooses, guillotines, and various chambers of death. In the Tarot System the emblem called the Hanged Man (number 12) is represented by a hanging man with a rope around his feet rather than his neck, as he is suspended upside down. One could interpret him also as the trapped man. But his head is illuminated as though it were a cup to be filled with higher, spiritual energies from Binah, the great mother. If this happens, he will reflect the transcendent purity from beyond the abyss.

Context

The hanged or hanging man is placed by Kabbalists in the path between glory and splendour (Hod) and strength or judgement (Geburah).
