Transformation

Description

Literally a radical or structural change, an experience of transformation is contrasted with one of transcendence in that the change to one's being is lasting. Such change may be psychopathological, as in identification or possession; it may arise through altered states of consciousness, be induced by drugs or arise in response to rituals and magical procedures such as initiation rites, or arise spontaneously during the process of individuation when the individual has the sense of being reborn as a larger personality. A cure may be regarded as the transformation from sickness to health. Transformation is central to the experience of conversion. It may commence in a state of turmoil and difficulty as thoughts, feelings and actions are all changed from traditional, habitual ways of behaviour and a new awareness of commitment takes over.
