Remembrance of God (Sufism)
- Practice of dhikr
Description
Various systems for achieving recollection or remembrance of God are described in Sufism. Each has the aim of attaining all-pervading knowledge and of reaching the state of [fana-fi-Allah]
, passing away of the self in the presence of God. One system of dhikr, covered in separate entries for each stage, is as described by Shaykh Kalimallah of the Chishtiyya order. It involves passing through successive states until continual remembrance is experienced and the devotee achieves saintship.
