Nose consciousness (Buddhism)

  • Ghranavijnana
  • Sna'i-rnam-par-shes-pa (Tibetan)
  • Fragrance awareness

Description

This is the consciousness that apprehends objects of fragrance, whether pleasant or unpleasant, equal (non-pervasive) or unequal (pervasive). It is twofold, that is: where nose consciousness is pleasant it is associated with indeterminate resultant consciousness with profitable result, where it is painful, with indeterminate resultant consciousness with unprofitable result.

Context

One of the six consciousnesses defined in Buddhism as dependent on the individual senses, and with objects of sense as their focus.
