Ear consciousness (Buddhism)

  • Shotravijnana
  • Rna-ba'i-rnam-par-shes-pa (Tibetan)
  • Hearing awareness

Description

This is the consciousness that apprehends objects of hearing, whether articulate or inarticulate, pleasant or unpleasant, and whether or not caused by elements conjoined with consciousness. It is twofold, that is: where ear consciousness is pleasant it is associated with indeterminate resultant consciousness with profitable result; where it is painful, it is associated with indeterminate resultant consciousness with unprofitable result.

Context

One of the six consciousnesses defined in Buddhism as dependent on the individual senses, and with objects of sense as their focus.
