Niyama (Hinduism)
- Self-discipline
Description
The five aspects of self-discipline apply to the relation between the individual and transcendent reality. The first two, purity (sauca) and contentment (samtosa), allow a shift from harmonizing external relations to an inward orientation. Another source lists ten niyamas - austerity, contentment, belief in God, charity, worship of God, listening to explanation of doctrine and scripture, modesty, discerning mind, repetition of prayers, sacrifice (including performance of religious sacrifice).
Context
