Description

The personality is characterized by spiritual torpor and the individual clings to his condition of unexhilarated wakefulness. This is the level of manifestation of consciousness in human form, physical birth. It is the chakra at the level of [prithivi]

(earth) and thus of smell. Meditation on the tip of the nose brings the beginnings of awareness, freedom from disease, lightness, inspiration, vitality, vigour, stamina, security, understanding of inner purity, softness of voice, inner melody. Behaviour in the first chakra is violent, based on insecurity, striking out like a frightened animal. The chakra encompasses the planes of genesis, illusion, anger, greed, delusion, avarice and sensuality. These are fundamental to human existence. Motivation is through desire for more experience and information. As the seat of the coiled serpent Kundalini, the source of serpent power and energy, this is the root of all growth and awareness.
