Manipura (Yoga)

  • City of the shining jewel awareness
  • Third chakra

Description

At this level the overriding interest is in turning all into the experiencer's own substance, forcing all to conform to his way of thinking. This is the chakra at the level of agni (fire) and thus of sight. Meditation on this chakra brings understanding of physiology, the body's internal functioning, and the role of ductless glands as they relate to human emotions. Concentration on the navel brings an end to indigestion, constipation and intestinal problems and the achievement of a long and healthy life. The second chakra has brought fluidity – here it takes the form of practicality. The power to command and organize is developed, there is control over speech and effective expression of ideas. Behaviour at this stage is marked by a striving for personal power and recognition, even if this has bad effects on family or friends. The plane encompasses karma, charity, atonement for error, good and bad company, selfless service, sorrow, the plane of dharma and the celestial plane. Remaining true to one's nature makes for stable and clear relationships with others. Balance is through selfless service without desire for reward. Practising charity clarifies the path. Aware of one's actions one achieves balance and may enter the celestial plane of illumination.
