Emblems of totality (Tarot)

  • World

Description

Among the archetypes projected by the psyche are emblems of wholes, the universe of personal awareness, the inter-relatedness or network of all things. These emblems include the starry sky or vault of heaven, spheres, circles, the grand assembly of souls, and the zodiac. In the Tarot system, the related emblem is the World (number 21), which is depicted as a large wreath supported by the three animals and one human figure associated with the constellations in which the equinoxes and solstices occur. The spirit of the world is depicted in human form within the wreath; although androgynous, representing male and female polarities, she appears as female. The representation is of the underworld of the subconscious reflecting the supreme father, Kether - the first step on the journey to cosmic consciousness, embodying spiritual rebirth.

Context

The World is placed by Kabbalists in the 32nd path between kingdom or world (Malkuth) and foundation (Yesod).
