Emblems of renewal (Tarot)

  • Judgement

Description

Among the archetypes projected by the psyche are emblems of self-renewal, of regeneration and renovation. A new personality is formed from the unharmonized and diverse aspects of the unenlightened man. As irrational, animal instincts are mastered the experiencer rises in triumph from the grave of ignorance. The emblems include the snake which sloughs off its skin, the caterpillar which turns into a butterfly and the self-renewing phoenix. All nature itself is a symbol of renewal, seen in the sprouting out of the ground, from fallen "dead" seeds, the green shoots of life. In the Tarot system it is the resurrection judgement (number 20) where Gabriel with his trumpet is depicted calling forth the dead from their graves.

Context

Judgement is correlated by the Kabbalists to Path 31 between kingdom (Malkuth) and splendour, glory and intelligence. (Hod).
