Organizing international voluntary work camps

Implementation:
The Service Civil International (SCI) among other activities works for the creation of an international voluntary service which will foster greater confidence between nations and eventually replace military service. Major activities include; voluntary workcamps of differing duration and nature, where international groups of people work and live together: week-end, short-term (2-4 weeks), work-study, solidarity, emergency. Participants are not paid for the work, but food and lodgings are provided free. The volunteers work on a project which could otherwise never afford the practical help given, and/or learn about each others cultures, the developing world and the environment. For instance, an SCI camp was held in Norway in 1989 on the theme "Peace and the Peace Movement". Twenty people from 12 countries discussed the theme.
