The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) is implementing a programme to bring the Internet to all Pacific Island nations. The SPC says the programme will concentrate, in particular, on connecting the Internet to remote areas of the region and encouraging users to design and operate their own web pages. The project believes that the internet is possibly of more benefit to people in dispersed areas like the Pacific, than it is to people living in Sydney or New York, where people have probably got 10 or 15 libraries that they can walk to and look for a book.
