Strengthening safety procedures in the areas of risk assessment
Context:
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends further development of existing safety procedures to promote scientific development and categorization in the areas of risk assessment and risk management. This might involve: information requirements; databases; procedures for assessing risks and conditions of release; establishment of safety conditions; monitoring and inspection, taking account of ongoing national, regional and international initiatives and avoiding duplication wherever possible.
