In Japan, the iron and steel industry accounted for 43.3 percent of the total volume of industrial waste, the chemical industry 13 percent, the textile industry 8.1 percent, and nonferrous metals industry 6.3 percent. Major industrial wastes consisted of slag (28.4 percent), spent acid (32.1 percent), and sludge (14.9 percent).
