In many developing countries, especially African, political parties are of tribal origin and as such are deprived of any national character. They are not based on any political or economic doctrine. Also, as within tribal rivalry, personal ambitions are often the sole motivation for seeking political power. These factors constitute a hindrance to national unity and to economic development.
