Reducing nitrogen and phosphoric pollution from animal production

  • Reducing organic contamination from animal farming

Context

Animal production has intensified in concert with demand. This has led to unacceptable increases in organic pollution. New measures are being sought to reduce such organic pollution.

Implementation

Technical developments and progress in the knowledge of nutritional requirements and management of animals have introduced solutions to reduce animal production pollution. New feed technologies such as feed systems (extended use of amino acids and related compounds, use of enzymes and continued use of growth promoting substances) and feed systems (formulation closer to requirements, phase feeding and increased use of highly digestible material) and feed supplements can be utilized. Feed related measures can be implemented quickly as they do not require major structural changes, heavy investment or any time consuming processes, whilst their impact is significant. Animals can be bred for better feed conversion and dietary protein utilization. Ammonia volatilization from slurry and litter can be reduced by improving animal housing design and biological/chemical treatment of slurry and litter. Clean environmental conditions should be maintained. Distribution, utilization processing and handling of slurry/manure on farming land can be improved.
