Reducing meat consumption to conserve grain

Context

The northern or developed world's diet, particularly the North American diet, contains a high proportion of meat. A lot of meat is produced by feeding grain to animals. The meat produced in this way contains only 10% of the calories contained in the grain fed to the animals, and 10 to 12 kgs of grain are required to produce 1 kg of meat. In order to provide food for the rapidly growing global population, one option forwarded is to encourage northerners to eat lower on the food chain (less meat and more grains and vegetables), in order to free up the potentially enormous volume of grain that would have been used for meat production for use by the hungry masses. This proposition additionally benefits the health of northerners.
