Context
A participatory approach to local organization should emphasize the following: (a) a grassroots approach, revitalizing and building on existing traditional knowledge; (b) respect for the social context of any intervention, group and individual endeavor; (c) social mobilization and an increase in individual awareness of sustainability; (d) adaptation of innovations to the needs of the population; (e) a partnership relationship within the communities; and (f) eventual withdrawal of outside advisors, as a means to achieve self-sustainability.
