Promoting individualism
Description
Creating or eliminating institutions, attitudes and modes of action to maximize independence in personal behaviour.
Context
An individual is (a) mathematically, a unit of quantity; (b) biologically, a single representative of a species; (c) psychologically, a personality; (d) in law, a legal entity; (e) in theology, a spiritual being.
Claim
Individualism is another name for allowing people to have responsibility for themselves. It leads to the emancipation of the individual and social equality on the one hand, and to opposition to hierarchic relations and the power of tradition on the other.
Counter-claim
Individualism blocks joint action by absorbing social energy into the personal realm. It breeds inherent selfishness and loss of solidarity.
