Ensuring adequate life education

  • Guaranteeing basic functional education
  • Increasing availability of education for basic life skills

Implementation

Schools can play an important role in promoting health among adolescents. Schools can create an environment where good health and education are reinforced throughout the day. This includes: (1) education in nutrition and the provision of a balanced diet in the school tuckshop or canteen; (2) regular exercise for all in the school community; (3) smoke-free buildings and programmes to eliminate staff and student use of tobacco; (4) education on the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the body and behaviour; (5) safety promotion and the prevention of violence, and anger management courses.

Three areas of direct relevance for youth are: (1) life sciences curriculum in the middle schools, emphasizing human biology and behaviour; (2) life skills training, providing self-esteem, empowerment and resilience; and (3) social support systems, connecting those in need with adequate, appropriate services.
