  2. Substandard abattoirs

Substandard abattoirs

  • Inadequate hygiene in slaughter houses
  • Inefficient slaughterhouse practices
  • Lack of slaughter facilities

Incidence

In 1994 it was reported that 378 UK slaughterhouses had failed tough new EU regulations, and some were so bad that they should have been closed many years ago on public health grounds. It was also noted that in poultry slaughterhouses there was no obligation to clean the enviscerator between disembowelling birds to prevent cross infection.
