Personal isolation in modern communities

  • Community lifestyles encouraging individual isolation

Incidence

In many communities of the developed world residents are isolated geographically, socially and structurally. The often rich cultural heritage is hidden from public view and is evident only in the homes and memories of individual families. Children may attend schools in different districts. Summer residents are often not integrated into the community. Newcomers in rural areas are resented, and attempts on their part to get involved are viewed as trying to impose urban values upon a rural setting. Feuds arise because of divergent opinions on land use, inadequate land agreements, and unobserved property rights.
