World statistics for 1980 indicate that the number of passenger cars in use was (in millions): 316.4 in the world, 5.8 in Africa, 7.3 in Oceania, 13.0 in South America, 31.6 in Asia, 115.3 in Europe (excluding USSR), and 135.1 in North America. In 1993, 8% of all humans owned a car. 89% of households in the USA owned one or more cars. Compared to their parents in 1950, people in the USA in 1993, on average, owned twice and many cars and drive 2.5 times as far each year.
