State of rapture (Buddhism)
- World of desires
- World of form
- World of formlessness
- Heaven
Description
This (temporary) state arises from the gratification of desire. The first level, [world of desires]
, refers to gratifying desires of the six lower worlds (instinctive urges, social recognition, overcoming suffering). The second level, [world of form]
, is rapture of the body, refreshed, wide awake, exercising one's natural talents. The third level, [world of formlessness]
, is rapture of the spirit, the most satisfying and enduring of all, arising from creative life of expanding and richer experience. This latter may "spill over" into the worlds of form and of desire, so that living is more healthy and behaviour likely to cause suffering to others is eliminated. Suffering is contained and absorbed in a wider happiness. This is heaven and may be experienced here on earth.
Context
One of the ten worlds described in Nichiren Soshu Buddhism.
