Description

Here knowledge is established, as doubt about the three divisions of time is overcome or transcended through discerning the causes of mentality-materiality or name and form, 'nama' and 'rupa'. They are seen to be neither created by a creator or causeless, but occurring due to conditions. Further, these conditions may be seen as both general and particular. Another may put away doubt through seeing the condition of mentality-materiality through their dependent origins in reverse order, ending with ignorance, or in direct order, starting with ignorance. Another means is by the consideration of karma and karma result. All this - whether thought of as correct knowledge, right seeing or overcoming doubt - arises in one practising insight; he is called a [lesser stream enterer]

Context

One of the five purifications or purities which constitute the trunk or body of understanding according to Hinayana Buddhism, the others being: purification or purity of view; purification by knowledge and vision of what is the path and what is not the path or purity of knowledge and discernment of the right path and the wrong path; purification by knowledge and vision of the way or purity of knowledge and discernment of the middle way; purification by knowledge and vision or purity of knowledge and discernment.
