Purification of view (Buddhism)
- Purity of views
- Ditthi-visuddhi-niddesa (Pali)
- Defining of mentality-materiality
- Delimitation of formations
Description
Correct seeing of mentality materiality or discernment of name and form is the purification or purity of view. In calm and serenity the person emerges from a jhana of the fine-material or immaterial spheres (except from neither-perception-nor-non-perception), discerns the jhana factors and the states associated with them. This is mentality or name. Scrutiny of the mentality or name reveals from whence it proceeds or by what it is supported. This is revealed as the heart basis or matter of the heart. The heart's support is revealed as primary elements. The remaining (derived) kinds of materiality or form have these elements as their support. All that defined as mentality or name - 'nama' - has the characteristic of bending upon the object. All that defined as materiality or form - 'rupa' - has the characteristic of being molested or changing (by the action of cold, for example). It is then possible to further discern materiality and mentality by different aspects, and this is the purification of view.
