Only-a-beginner subtle contemplation (Buddhism)

  • Las-dang-po-pa-tsam-kyi-yid-byed (Tibetan)
  • Manaskaradhikarmika

Description

This constituent of the mental state preparatory to the first concentration is the same as the calm abiding state. It is regarded, however, not as a terminus of a meditation sequence, but as a transition phase, along with the other six; and with preparations (samantaka) and special insight (vipashyana), leading further. The yogi meditates on the selflessness of the person, watching for that "I" to appear which is fused with the idea of mind and body. The appearance of "I" is analyzed and seen to be non-existent.

Context

This is the first of the preparations in Tibetan Gelugpa Buddhism, and the first stage of meditation on emptiness.
