Meditative states of mental abidings (Buddhism)
- Navakara chittasthiti
- Sems gnas dgu (Tibetan)
Description
To attain the higher meditative states of concentration and absorption one has to cultivate calm abiding (shamatha) and special insight (vipashyana). The former leads to an acquisition of requisite mental power, the latter to wisdom. During the cultivation of calm abiding a meditator passes through nine states of mind called mental abidings.
