Meeting God with emptiness (Christianity)
- Blissful love
- State of rest
Description
Without intermediary, beyond all activity and virtue there is a simple, inward act in blissful love. The light of God's unity reveals darkness, which envelops. The individual falls into a modeless state where he no longer has the power of observing things in their distinctness. He is transformed and pervaded by simple resplendence. Overcome by God's love, all activity fails him. His spirit inclines towards blissful enjoyment, he overcomes God and is one in spirit with Him. Interiorly unable to move, powerless over himself and all activity, he feels and knows only unique resplendence accompanied by a sense of well-being and penetrating savour. Through the simple illumination of God and the inclination of the spirit to be blissfully immersed in God, the spirit is transported into a state of rest, united with God.
Context
According to John Ruusbroec, there are three modes in which meeting God in the interior way of life is practised. This is the first of the three, that of blissfully resting in one's self.
