Meeting God both resting and working in accordance with righteousness (Christianity)
Description
God comes ceaselessly to us, both with intermediary and without intermediary, calling to blissful rest and to activity. The interior person is whole and undivided although possessing his life in these two ways, completely in God in blissful rest, completely in himself in active love. Here all that he could desire is spiritually revealed and held out to him. The righteous person has thus the truly spiritual life which will continue for ever, transformed after this life into a higher state. Righteousness is attained when rest and activity are possessed in the one exercise, going toward God with interior love through eternal activity, entering God with blissful inclination toward eternal rest, remaining in God and yet going out to creatures in virtue and righteousness through a love common to all.
Context
According to John Ruusbroec, there are three modes in which meeting God in the interior way of life is practised. This is the last of the three, arising from the other two, blissful rest in emptiness and active desire.
