Meeting God with active desire (Christianity)

Description

Meeting God with the intermediary of the gift of savourous wisdom, which is the ground and source of all virtue, the interiorly fervent person turns to God in a way of desire and activity, to give God glory and honour, and to offer Him himself and all his works to be consumed in the love of God. Love is in a state of likeness and of desire to be united with God. His love may be so intense that all that God can bestow apart from Himself seems small and unsatisfying and increases restlessness. Lingering over God's gifts or over any creature is a hindrance as they cannot satisfy. In the ground of his being, hunger and thirst of love are such that he surrenders himself at every moment, each sudden illumination of God being seized and touched in love, constantly dying and being reborn as yearning of love is renewed.

Context

According to John Ruusbroec, there are three modes in which meeting God in the interior way of life is practised. This is the second of the three, actively loving, but is the cause of the first, emptiness.
