Arhat (Buddhism)
- Arahant
Description
One ready for, deserving of, great perfection beyond human perfection – prajna paramita. According to Buddha, an arhat has overcome the first five "fetters", or character defects which obstruct realization, and is "ready" (the literal meaning of "arhat"), with perfect or mature mind, to face and overcome the next five. In the hinayana tradition, this is one who retires from the world to strive for his own enlightenment.
